SLATE ROOF REPLACEMENT OF ASPHALT ROOF - Project Description:
This home in Sea Girt, NJ was built 3 years ago. The home was designed and framed for a genuine slate roof. At the time of actual installation the home owner decided to use CertainTeed Grand Manor® asphalt shingles.
Three years later the home owner asked All County Exteriors to replace the existing roof with slate, so that the home would be as originally intended.
Changes include:
- The original CertainTeed® roof was removed
- The slate chosen is from the Vermont Slate Company. It was ordered in random widths (5 inch to 13 inch)
- The variety of colors selected include, unfading gray, mottled green and purple, unfading red, semi-weathering grey green and Vermont black
- All the slate shingles were sorted on the ground to assure a proper color mix when installed on the home
- Copper slating nails were to assure longevity and copper was used for the roof valley flashing, again to provide durability as well as to provide a vintage look to the finished result
- To both protect the roof, landscaping, vehicles and people, copper "snow guards" were spaced appropriately along the lower portion of the roof. These were installed with copper nails and prevent snow from slipping off the roof unexpectedly. Snow stays in place and melts in the sun.
- There was an existing Copper Standing Seam Metal roof on the turrets of this home. All County carefully installed a copper drip edge under the existing standing seam roof. This provides a weather tight finish and also provides the interface to the new slate roofing that trims out the lower portion of these turrets
- This new Vermont Slate roof provides a vintage look to the home. The materials used and the installation practices followed provide a beautiful look that will have a life expectancy of over 75 years.
